Just wanted to come back here and say that "The Shaman's Apprentice" was really, really good. I can't believe it hasn't gotten more attention, it's just not fair. Left a few comments and a rating, and now I'm checking out the author's other works- which are similarly great and underappreciated. Thanks for the fantastic recommendations!
Yes, there's a lot of other stories that easily get overlooked. I mean, many platforms are just saturated with so many stories. But it's actually fun searching for the good ones. It's kind of like going on a treasure hunt.
Hi! I stumbled across your newsletter because you added a novel that i posted on itch.io (Tomorrow Ye Will Get Your Pay) to your collection, and I'm so glad I did haha. Thank you so much for trying to get the word out there about indie novels-- there's so much cool stuff out there that is just impossible to find for the average reader. I'm looking forward to seeing what you turn up!
Hi! Thanks so much for subscribing! Yes, I did add your work to my collection. The blurb caught my interest 😃. I’ll be slowly going through everything in my Itch collection over time. Right now, I am going through an issue of the Werewolf Versus zine from a bundle sale on Itch. It's very good so far.
And yeah, there’s a ton of great writing out there by pros and everyday folks alike. I just thought, why not try to shine a light on some of it? And build a little indie writer/reader community.
I really miss how online reading and writing spaces felt 20 years ago. It used to be more about building community around our shared interests, less about self-promotion. Like, we were all in it together. I want to bring some of that back. I know it might be a long shot (kind of like climbing Everest in flip-flops with how things are online now), but I’m hoping there are others out there who feel the same.
First of all, I love the idea behind this newsletter! Especially the focus on short stories, since those seem rather left behind in the constantly updating digital environment we find ourselves in. Thank you for starting this project!
I tried "The Sinew Tree" and enjoyed it, it has a lot of imagery and creepy details that pull you in. That scene where he tried to rescue the dogs was especially horrifying. The middle isn't really as scary but the ending is great: intriguing, bittersweet, and lonely. It's a real "is the MC crazy or is the world crazy, and which would be worse?" moment. I only wish they gave the MC a bit more emotion towards their family. Overall a great story
Thank you so much for reading and for this thoughtful comment! That scene with the dogs stuck with me too, and I agree, the ending leaves an ache. If you get a chance, I’d love if you could share your thoughts directly on the author’s story page as well. I really appreciate you being here and engaging with the work. :)
I actually already left a comment, but I went back to edit in more details :). Indie authors really deserve engagement; seeing view numbers go up is nice but not half as encouraging as people actually discussing your story. But I'm sure I'm just preaching to the choir here anyways xD. That's why having a newsletter like this is so amazing, it doubles as feedback and as a recommendation list. I wish you best of luck and look forward to the next post :)
